CAMECA® Announces Strategic Partnership with Polytechnique Montréal

Madison, Wi., January 12, 2022

CAMECA, a business unit of AMETEK, Inc. and a world-leading supplier of microanalytical and metrology instrumentation for research and process control, is proud to announce a partnership with Polytechnique Montréal. This new partnership includes the acquisition of CAMECA’s latest Atom Probe Tomography (APT) instrument – the Invizo 6000.

The Invizo 6000 introduces breakthrough technologies, including a patented electrostatic design that enables a simultaneous increased field of view and enhanced mass resolving power; a deep UV laser to promote enhanced ion emission; advanced dual-beam beam delivery optics that improve specimen symmetry; and a new extraction electrode design. These new features enhance specimen yield, increase the data quality and analysis volumes, and dramatically expand the analytical capabilities of the APT method.

This new facility –POLYAPT - is established following support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and Québec’s Ministère de l’Économie et de l’Innovation. The project is a strong alliance between Polytechnique Montréal, McGill University, Université de Montréal, École de technologie supérieure, and Université de Sherbrooke. The five institutions join forces to deploy a unique infrastructure that will cement their efforts and strengthen their international standing in strategic research areas. The new capabilities enabled by the deployed atom probe infrastructure will guide and accelerate the development of novel and enhanced functionalities relevant to a variety of applications. These applications include information technology, photonics, quantum technologies, clean energy, aerospace and transportation, metallurgy, and health and bio-integrated technologies. The facility, led by Professor Oussama Moutanabbir and managed by Dr. Sebastian Koelling, will support communities active in these areas from both academia and industry.

CAMECA is looking forward to working closely with Polytechnique Montréal in developing new areas of application and demonstrating the advantages the Invizo 6000 provides across a broad range of material science challenges.

“Since developing the revolutionary Local Electrode Atom Probe nearly two decades ago, CAMECA has remained at the forefront of atom probe instrument design,” said Jesse D. Olson, CAMECA Business Unit Manager. “We are excited to partner with one of the leading academic research institutions in the world, Polytechnique Montréal, to be the first recipient of a full production Invizo instrument, and to explore the capabilities of our newest APT product across a wide range of exciting new applications.” Developed at the Atom Probe Technology Center in Madison, Wisconsin, the Invizo 6000 continues to advance CAMECA’s position as the world leader in atom probe tomography.
